résumé en anglais (abstract in english)
The aim of this study is to propose a first analysis of the lexical
semantics of the adverb soudain 'suddenly' in a temporal
semantics. Three semantic properties of soudain 'suddenly' are
described: its aspectual behavior, the impression of suddenness (as
opposed to rapidity), and the lack of expectation. It is argued that the
semantics of soudain 'suddenly' aspectually derives an
achievement and includes an implicit logophoric argument (often, but not
necessarily identified with the speaker) for whom the situation
described lacks gradual change and is unexpected at the time in
question. The formal analysis makes use of ordinary individuals, times,
degrees, and possible worlds in addition to notions such as a logophoric
'self', a left temporal boundary, a 'distinguish' relation, and an
'expect' relation.
